Cameron Clark and Agnes Selkirk Clark

Connecticut's Mid 20th Century Power Couple in Fairfield County Real Estate.

As printed in the NY Times 1920
The engagement has been announced of Agnes Selkirk, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Selkirk of Des Moine, to Mr. Cameron Clarke of 147 East 46th Street, Son of Mr. Edward Clarke of Holyoke Mass.  Miss Selkirk is a Landscape Architect and graduate of Lowthorpe Scool of Groton, Mass. Mr. Clarke is an architect and graduate of MIT and is an alumnus of the American Academy in Rome.
From his obituary after his death in the St Croix, he was described as one of the foremost restoration architects in America. His work stands in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois and Pennsylvania. He restored the Fairifeld Town Hall, pictured below.

At the posting of this article in January, 2014, there were 8 homes on the market designed or redesigned by Cameron Clark in Fairfield that range in price from 2.9mm to 6.9mm.

While Cameron Clark designed and built many prominent homes and estates in Connecticut especially in Lower Fairfield County, his wife Agnes was designing the gardens for the estates. A true real estate power couple, they were one of a very few teams that changed the aesthetics of our area. Today, their designs have stood the test of time. Mr. Clarke also renovated and added onto older homes and designed the renovations for public and church buildings. The couple was active from the 1920 through the 1950s. They lived in Greenfield Hill where many of his projects were built. Agnes Selkirk Clark was inducted into the Gardening Hall of Fame and won many local and national awards.

The facade of the homes and buildings were designed to draw you in. Once inside the flow was unparelleled beginning with lovely formal entry ways adorned by sweeping and elegant staircases. They all featured large rooms, and every comfort the people of the times enjoyed. Exquisite millwork was one of his hallmarks, including at least two fireplaces with carved mantels.

The Fairfield Historical Society has correspondences and folders from both of their works in their collections. Copy and paste two links below for PDF for FHS Collections.
